DOLLAR-A-DAY PUBLIC TRANSPORT FOR PENSIONERS & SELF-FUNDED RETIREES

Thursday 7 August 2008

FAMILY FIRST MLC Robert Brokenshire has called upon the State Government to offer additional support to pensioners and self-funded retirees by providing a $1.00 ticket for buses, trains and trams for pensioners and self-funded retirees for all-day travel during off-peak times.

“Rising inflation, petrol prices and food prices – and recent fare increases – are all combining to make it real tough for pensioners”, Mr Brokenshire said, “The Rudd Government let pensioners down also in their most recent budget.  Our pensioners deserve relief against rising costs of living, and can do their bit for the environment also by catching more, affordable, public transport to reduce greenhouse gas emissions”

Mr Brokenshire pointed out that now was a convenient time to implement a dollar-a-day ticket, with the most recent State Budget including an upgrade of the ticketing system.

FAMILY FIRST research reveals that in the ACT, Action Buses have a $1.40 off-peak all-day travel.

NOTE: FAMILY FIRST’s Pensioner Off-Peak Travel Tickets would allow unlimited travel for those holding a Pensioner Concession Card or similar card, outside of off-peak periods (those being 6am-9am and 4pm-6pm) from 12:01am to midnight in a given calendar day.
