ACTION NEEDED ON
ADULT VIDEO/DVD PLACEMENT IN STORES TO PROTECT CHILDREN

Tuesday 17 March 2009

FAMILY FIRST leader Dennis Hood MLC will introduce a bill to segregate R18+ Adult/DVDs videos from other videos/DVDs in our video/DVD stores.

For some reason, a lot of stores now think that it’s OK to mix R18+ adult material in with other material, including material made for children to watch, such as cartoons. Unfortunately, there’s no law against it and I’m receiving more and more complaints about pornographic material alongside children’s material”

“Parents should be able to expect to bring their children to a video store without them being exposed to pornographic video covers”, Dennis Hood said.

Although Classification is a national process, carried out by the Commonwealth’s Classification Board, States and Territories are responsible for enforcement and can impose local rules.

Under the proposed FAMILY FIRST bill, R18+ adult videos must be placed in a separate area to children’s material.

Dennis Hood proposes to have the bill drafted after receiving comments from stakeholders on the issue.
