PARLIAMENT NARROWLY BACKS CLONES, ANIMAL-HUMAN HYBRIDS

Thursday 26 March 2009

State Parliament has today voted for Human Cloning and the creation of Animal-Human Hybrids, in some cases by narrow 1-vote margins on a conscience vote.

Family First moved amendments to ban creating hybrids, which were only narrowly lost by 1 vote (9:10 with 2 paired) just before midnight last night.

Other amendments by Family First  designed to prevent eggs being harvested from aborted baby girls also failed, 8 votes to 12.  The final vote on the Bill in its entirety was 12:9 in favour of the Bill passing.

“The one-vote margin on hybrids, and the significant bloc of No-votes overall shows that Family First is well in tune with community values on these very important subjects”, Mr Brokenshire said, “There was a distinct lack of community debate or consultation on this important bill and it has only been some members of the watchdog Legislative Council that stood up for traditional family values and put the Government to test on this legislation”

“We are very disappointed to see this Bill passed, as we reject human cloning for research and cloning for reproduction, and we utterly reject the disgusting idea of fertilising cow’s eggs with human sperm, and all the other possible permutations being tried around the world”

The legislation (Statutes Amendment (Prohibition of Human Cloning for Reproduction and Regulation of Research Involving Human Embryos) Bill) was part of a national scheme voted upon by other State and Federal Parliaments in previous years, and is a regime that the Western Australian Parliament rejected in 2008.

“If members of the public are upset about this unethical legislation, or when research goes wrong and becomes public, the Executive Cabinet of this Government will have to take full responsibility.  This was a Government Bill.”
